Here’s a video to go with the pictures of our White Christmas. A White Christmas in TexasPosted by Steven in Fun, Garden, Holidays, Home, Outdoors, Photography, Video, Weather on December 25th, 2009 at 11:57am
Today is Christmas. It’s a White Christmas! We had snowed all day on Christmas Eve. It was 75 degrees and beautiful on the 23rd then it dropped to 30 degrees (that’s an insane drop) on the 24th, with 30 – 45 MPH wind! This “near blizzard” as they called it was unexpected and the amount of snow is very unusual for North Texas (three inches in Benbrook with some one foot drifts). How wonderful it was that it happened on Christmas Eve though, because here we are on Christmas day with snow all over the place… a real White Christmas. I even built a snowman. I’ll put together a video later… including some home storm chaser action of me jumping directly into the “blizzard” for some sweet footage. P.S. Our street is frozen solid with 1 cm of ice (!) but it’s blue skies and sunshine again today so everything is starting to melt. Western Fun with Mom & DadPosted by Steven in Family, Fun, Holidays, Home, Outdoors, Photography, Places on October 18th, 2009 at 10:16am
Mom and Dad visited us this Fall. We did some fun western stuff in Fort Worth plus the Benbrook Cowboy Roundup. We also spent some time by Benbrook Lake and ate good vegan food. Summer Garden UpdatePosted by Steven in Food, Fun, Garden, Holidays, Home, Outdoors, Photography, Places on July 25th, 2009 at 07:15pm
Here are some pics from our garden at this point. We’ve have 300+ tomatoes and we’re starting to get some good cucumbers now. The peppers are few but tasty. Our sunflowers expired. The tallest one was about 9 feet tall. Fun to grow! God Bless AmericaPosted by Sudi in Family, Food, Fun, General, Holidays, Outdoors, Photography, Places, Weather on July 8th, 2009 at 09:38pm
We enjoyed an unforgettable 4th of July. Steven got me surprise tickets for a Concert & Fireworks Show at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens. We arrived at 5:30 and stood in line (we actually sat in our lawn chairs under the shade of a huge Magnolia tree) for an hour. At 6:30 the doors were opened. It was a very hot day, but around 7ish, the temperature dropped to a comfortable 97 degrees so the rest of the night was very enjoyable. Two options for seating were offered, “lawn” or “tables”. Steven “the genious” got us lawn tickets and we got to sit front and center in front of more than 10,000 people. We really had the best seats (grass) in the house. We laid out our old La Jolla beach towels and enjoyed fun snacks and drinks. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra did the fabulous concert. All patriotic marches and good ol’ American classics like Yankee Doodle Dandy. The grand finale was performed by a soloist, a young soprano who sang God Bless America, a huge flag unfolded in the back as she sang and the spectacular fireworks began. We had the time of our lives. The Village of BenbrookPosted by Steven in Church, Family, General, Holidays, Home, Photography, Places on June 5th, 2009 at 09:57pm
This was taken by Sergeant C. P. Devos of the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 or 1918. Benbrook was a training camp during World War I. There are more old Benbrook pictures from Deseronto Archives on flickr. The Day After YesterdayI surveyed the wind and hail damage from yesterday. We only lost two tomatoes out of about 30 and possibly one sunflower out of about 20, but I’m seeing if its half-severed trunk will fuse back together. The others had their leaves pierced and a few were ripped off, but I’m sure they’ll be standing straight and tall again after a week of sunshine like last time. A periodic hail storm might even be a good thing. It sort of showed me which leaves to thin out and also provided some good soft organic matter for our compost bin. I found our heavy-duty back doormat flipped over 10 feet away along with a sandwich bag and a tin foil dispenser. We didn’t lose any shingles and the pansies (they’re supposed to be dead by this time anyway) have again proven absolutely indestructible. Not too shabby! Two days ago it was 84 degrees. Today it hovered around 32 all day. That means ice! Winter in north Texas seems to be an unpredictable fluctuation between 30 and 80 degrees. The weather people don’t seem to know what to do. At noon a weather guy said it was going to warm up after lunch. But what really happened next was that our trees became ice sculptures. Check out the beautiful icicles and enjoy the video of me dropping my frozen shoe. If you enjoyed this, look at my Weather Set on Flickr. Christmas with LucyPosted by Sudi in Family, Fun, Garden, General, Holidays, Home, Photography, Places on January 4th, 2009 at 10:58am
We had a wonderful Christmas! We had artichoke spinach dip on Christmas EVE right before we opened gifts. The candle light service at church was beautiful. We had our famous all vegan lasagna Christmas Day! WOW, it was fabulous. Finger foods for New Year’s Eve that turned out a real hit! We visited Grandbury. Lucy loved it! The weather has been fun to say the least. We’ve had 25 degree days all the way to sunny 80 degree days, with thunderstorms and rain in between. You gotta love Texas weather, not a dull moment. God is Good and has given us many blessings. Happy 2009!
